PPPTraf is a little program i wrote to monitor bytes in/out over a modem link. This all started because i have to pay per meg on my ISP for a static dialup permanent connection. It now features a ncurses display, and shows bytes in/out per IP on your lan, going via your FBSD router. At the moment you have to modify your /usr/local/etc/ppptraf.conf to list your IPs. I expect to write a new version where all this is automatic (afterall, all local IP information can be obtained from ifconfig -a, or various syscalls. I just haven't bothered do doing this yet. Afterall, it works PERFECTLY for me, so why bother further hacking it up?). To download PPPTraf, go look up ftp.diskiller.net in /pub/projects/ppptraf. Orjust cd /usr/ports/net/ppptraf; make; make install. I know this program isn't perfect, its something i hacked together in a day or so. Much can be improved, so if you have any ideas, please email me and let me know. Bugs fixes, patches, etc, will be gratefully accepted. Other things i need to do: Write a manual page ? (anyone wanna do that for me ? :) D.
I've essentially abandoned the PPPTraf project since i don't need it anymore. I wrote it, cuz i needed a program to do this, but now i don't so i have no reason to work on it. I still get occasional email on it. If anybody wants to pick up this project, please feel free to do so. Call it PPPTraf 2.0 to distinguish it from version 1.0 that i wrote, or rename it to IPTraf or NetTraf or something (although an EXCELLENT program by the name of IPTraf already exists, and its a linux program). Email me and let me know if you want to take over as maintainer. |
